The Indiana Fever is still soaring to new heights with the WNBA No. 1 draft pick. The Fever rookie has been named to an All-Star game with 700,735 votes, making her the only player to receive such high votes. On the other hand, Angel Reese stood in the fifth position as she garnered 381,518 votes. The only two rookies on the All-Star team will now be pairing up to face Team USA’s current roster. But, before locking horns on the court, their rivals had a few words to say.
“It’s going to be super competitive…I was sitting at home watching the All-Stars lose to Team USA the last time,” Kelsey Plum said in the postgame press conference. Both Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson are among the top players on Team USA’s roster and will be playing on the Olympic court again hoping to bring the gold medal home.
But before that, they will be facing the All-Star team led by a WNBA rookie. Notably, this is the first time in the last decade that two rookies are on the WNBA All-Star team in the same season. “I mean, it’s really exciting, you know, credit to, I forget, I know that…Kelce, Aliyah and Caitlin are all on it…Angel Reese is on it too,” Plum added while A’ja Wilson nodded.
While Clark features an impressive 16 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, Reese boasts an average of 13.2 points and 11.8 rebounds. However, the opponent team is no less competitive. Joining six-time All-Star Wilson are 11-time All-Star Diana Taurasi, 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner, and six-time All-Star Breanna Stewart. Seems like rookies might be intimidated with the veterans on the Team USA roster. But that might now be the case as there are other important players on the All-Star roster.
Get ready for a star-studded showdown
Besides ‘Chi-Town Barbie’ and Clark, the additional players named for the All-Star game are DeWanna Bonner, Brionna Jones, Arike Ogunbowale, Kelsey Mitchell, Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby, Jonquel Jones, Allisha Gray, and Kayla McBride who will play against Plum and Wilson. All these WNBA stars were chosen by current WNBA players, the national broadcasting and sportswriters’ panel, and fans.
Moving on, the upcoming matchup is going to be on fire as it will feature longtime rivals Clark and Reese collaborating to score. Reese is coming up with her 11th consecutive double-double, which is the highest by a WNBA rookie till now. Meanwhile, Clark, also named the Rookie of the Month in May, has been a vital reason for drawing huge crowds to WNBA arenas.
Even her last matchup against Plum’s Aces witnessed the fifth-largest crowd in history since 1999. The matchup at Footprint Center between the Team WNBA and Team USA is going to be exciting in the sold out Gainbridge Arena. What do you think, who’ll win? Catch the July 20th matchup to know!
