EERIE photographs showing the aftermath of the atomic bombs that landed on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan at the end of World War Two have emerged.

The collection of images taken the day after the devastating US bombs shows the level of destruction unleashed on the two cities.

It has emerged 70 years after being confiscated by victorious American troops as generals looked to prevent a public backlash against the mass killing.

The haunting photos were taken by Yosuke Yamahata, a military photographer working for the Japanese Empire’s propaganda machine.

He arrived at the flattened city of Nagasaki just 12 hours after the blast which along with the Hiroshima bomb three days earlier are estimated to have killed around 120,000 people.

Some of the photos featured in a 1952 edition of Life Magazine — but many have never been seen by the public before.

They are going on sale along with revealing wartime photographs taken by the US military policeman that seized them.

This second stash includes snaps of General Douglas MacArthur, head of the American forces, and President Dwight D Eisenhower.

The two sets of snaps will be sold with a handwritten note from Yamahata about what he witnessed in Nagasaki.
