Angelina Jolie calls on women to protect their health on International Ovarian Cancer Day.

On her personal Instagram on May 8, the 47-year-old actress posted a photo with her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007 after nearly 10 years of battling breast and ovarian cancer. Jolie wrote: “May 9 is my mother’s 73rd birthday, who died 15 years ago from cancer. In June, I will be just one month away from the age my mother was when she was diagnosed. I have had multiple surgeries to reduce my risk of cancer and will continue to have check-ups in the future.”

In 2013, the Maleficent star decided to have a double mastectomy to avoid cancer due to the faulty BRCA 1 gene. Two years later, Jolie had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. Among her family members, her grandmother, mother and aunt all died of cancer. After two major surgeries, the actress’s risk of developing the disease dropped from 87% for breast cancer and 50% for ovarian cancer to 5%.

“Everything has changed since my mother passed away. I want to send my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones to cancer. At the same time, I hope that patients who are fighting the disease will have enough strength to overcome it,” Jolie continued. The star also advised those with a history of cancer in their family to regularly check their health, especially women: “To all women, take the time to take care of yourself by doing mammograms, blood tests and ultrasounds.”

In 2019, Jolie told Time that she decided to undergo the preventive surgeries because she wanted to see her children grow up. “My wish is to live as long as possible to take care of my children and grandchildren,” the actress, born in 1975, said.

Jolie is the mother of six children, including Maddox (21 years old), Pax (19 years old), Zahara (18 years old), Shiloh (16 years old) and twins Knox and Vivienne (14 years old). Of these, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne are the three biological children she has with her ex-husband – actor Brad Pitt.

Angelina Jolie was born into an artistic family. She made her screen debut with her father, Jon Voight, in the 1982 film Lookin’ to Get Out and made her acting debut in 1993 with Cyborg . The Mr. & Mrs. Smith actress has won three Golden Globes and an Oscar throughout her career.

Jolie has been married three times. In 2014, she entered into a Hollywood-wide marriage with Brad Pitt. Together, they raised six children and participated in many charity activities around the world. However, in April 2018, they divorced after conflicts believed to have stemmed from the actor’s alcoholism.
