The race in Austria turned out as an extremely heated event between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. Both drivers collided, which led McLaren‘s team principal, Andrea Stella, to claim that Verstappen is replaying the 2021 season again and is behaving unsportsmanlike. However, this infuriated Christian Horner, who pointed out the Italian for giving unfair criticism towards the Dutchman.
Max Verstappen started the 2024 season with the hopes of claiming his fourth consecutive driver’s championship. However, as the races went by, Red Bull‘s lead began to shrink and became vulnerable to other teams. On the other hand, Lando Norris started to emerge as a contender in the title fight, and the two giants locked horns for the win in Austria.
However, this battle ended with the two titans colliding. This led Andrea Stella to draw similarities from the infamous 2021 season on how the Dutchman has always been going over the white line to push his rivals out of sight.
He[Max Verstappen] was punished in 2021 if he did something wrong just as Lewis[Hamilton], who he was racing so hard that year, for things he did wrong. I think it's wrong and unfair to label a driver like that and I'm sure in the heat of the moment it was frustrating for Andrea[Stella], but that's just tough racing.Christian Horner said in an interview with Sky Sports
On the contrary, Christian Horner lamented Stella’s stance and claimed that Verstappen was punished for his wrongdoings in 2021. He then further condemned his rival’s comments as he deemed them to be wrong and unfair to attribute any driver with such harsh wordings.

Christian Horner deems Sprint race the reason for Lando Norris’ impatience
While Horner took shots at Stella, he didn’t let things slide without mentioning Norris. He asserted that the young Brit needs to learn how to fight the reigning champion, as the latter is a tough racer and will not change his way of driving.

He then further took shots at the 24-year-old by claiming that he was just hungover after being thrashed in the Austria Sprint.
He [Norris] was getting his elbows out, it was two tough races [in Austria] It’s probably a bit of a hangover from [Saturday]. Max passed him without DRS into Turn 4 and then he got mugged by his team-mate, so there was probably a little bit of a hangover of that.Christian Horner said in an interview with RacingNews365
The 50-year-old stated that Norris got his elbows out in the Sprint, and took the lead. However, his work was soon outdone by the Dutchman as he overtook him without DRS, and to further rub salt in his wounds, his teammate overtook him at the same corner. Horner claimed that’s why he had the hunger to get past Verstappen in the main race to assert dominance.
Despite Horner’s strong stance that the clash was a racing incident, the Austrian GP steward revealed it was Verstappen’s fault. Thus, he was penalized with a 10-second penalty and two penalty points on his super-license.
