THESE breathtaking photographs reveal the brutality of life on the frontline during the battle for the Pacific in World War II.

The newly released set of colourised photos show in previously unseen detail exactly what troops fighting in the ferocious campaign saw.

In another moving photograph, a badly wounded marine is tended to by his comrade as the battlefield around him is razed.

The stunning photos are the work of teen Jared Enos, of North Kingston in Rhode Island, USA.

The emergency medical technician and amateur photographer, 19, painstakingly revived the 60-year-old snaps to bring their colours back to life.

He said: “There are two theatres in World War II that are known particularly for their carnage: The eastern front in Europe, and the Pacific theatre.

“While quality photos of the eastern front are sparse, the United States Marine Corps has a respectable collection of images documenting some of the bloodiest battles the United States fought in World War II (namely, Okinawa and Iwo Jima).

“In that context, I find a lot of these images moving, considering what the men who’ve been photographed might have experienced.”
